This year Chairgonomics competes in the TU/e Contest, which is a platform created by the Eindhoven University of Technology to pitch innovative ideas or prototypes and give these ideas a kickstart.
Currently most people are working behind a desk in the Netherlands. However, humans are not designed for sitting for extensive amounts of time. In the Netherlands it is required by law to stand up and walk around every 2 hours of working behind a desk to prevent physical problems and degradation of muscles in the long run.
Most people have special ergonomic chairs that support their sitting posture to prevent these physical problems from happening. However, most of these users do not use the tools that such a chair provides properly and will therefore still experience these problems. Users can for example slouch over the table when reading a magazine or start ‘laying’ in their chair. These postures can result in back and neck pains which would require extra physical therapy at a later age, costing their employees money and efficiency.
Chairgonomics provides a solution to these problems! Our smart sleeves will give haptic feedback when sitting sessions last too long and when the sitting posture of the user is bad. By using sensors and integrated software the chairs will detect these situations and act on it by vibrating the chair. This makes users aware of their sitting behavior and allows them to act on it.
Conventional solutions as software programs that monitor the users working behavior are usually ignored or even uninstalled and solutions as standing desks or specialized chairs are often very expensive and do not eliminate the problem entirely, because these solutions just shift the physical load to different muscle groups. Our product will make users aware of their behavior by actively encouraging users to improve their health.
Furthermore our product will be connected to the internet through Wi-Fi. This allows for interactive connectivity to chairs and improves the flex working capabilities of the company. Chairs can automatically change the height setting to its users and can be booked for optimal use in flex working environments.
Through the accompanied app, the user can track its sitting behavior and can get notifications of daily/weekly summaries. Furthermore settings can be adjusted according to the wishes of the user and chairs can be booked in flex working environments.
By applying skills learned during the past years to create, develop and improve our idea, we will learn a lot of valuable skills for now and for the future. With the drive to create something spectacular, this project will most definitely flourish.

With the awareness that back problems due to a wrong sitting posture is becoming a bigger problem, I want Chairgonomics to succeed. After doing some small projects in high school and at the university, I am know ready to use this gained knowledge for Chairgonomics.
